Strengthening Community Peacebuilding in Lainya County, Central Equatoria State

Lainya County in Central Equatoria State continues to experience recurring conflicts driven by land disputes, returnee reintegration challenges, and communal tensions. These conflicts disrupt livelihoods, weaken social cohesion, and create divisions within communities. Chiefs and community leaders play a central role in resolving disputes through customary systems, yet many lack structured skills and practical tools to effectively manage complex and evolving conflicts.

One of the major challenges in Lainya County is the persistence of unresolved disputes, particularly those related to land ownership and resource use. These disputes often escalate due to mistrust, limited dialogue, and insufficient mediation capacity among local leaders.

The return of displaced populations has further increased pressure on land and resources, intensifying tensions. Without strengthened capacity, local leaders face difficulties in facilitating inclusive dialogue and achieving sustainable conflict resolution.

Strengthening Local Capacity

To address these challenges, a peacebuilding training was conducted targeting chiefs, youth, women representatives, and other community stakeholders. The training focused on enhancing knowledge and practical skills in mediation, dialogue facilitation, and community reconciliation.

Through participatory learning approaches, participants explored the root causes of conflict and practiced techniques for peaceful resolution. Key focus areas included land dispute management, inclusive dialogue, and trust building among divided groups.

As a result, participants demonstrated improved understanding of peacebuilding principles and expressed strong commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence within their communities.

From Conflict to Cooperation

The impact of the training was evident in a community where a long standing land dispute between two families had caused division and occasional violence. Previous attempts to resolve the conflict had failed, leading to deep mistrust.

Following the training, a local chief applied newly acquired mediation skills to convene a dialogue session involving both families, elders, and community representatives. Using a neutral and respectful approach, he facilitated open discussions where both parties shared their concerns.

This process led to a peaceful agreement and restored trust between the families. The resolution not only ended the conflict but also strengthened relationships within the wider community, demonstrating the practical value of investing in local peacebuilding capacity.

This peace-building effort has brought communities together, families are now at peace and able to work together for the benefit of all of us. “ Chief Representative.

The peacebuilding training in Lainya County marks an important step toward strengthening grassroots conflict resolution mechanisms. However, sustaining peace requires continued investment in capacity building, follow-up support, and inclusive community engagement.

Impact Pathway Africa remains committed to supporting local leaders with the tools and knowledge needed to prevent and manage conflicts effectively. Strengthening these local systems will contribute to long term stability, resilience, and peaceful coexistence across communities in South Sudan.
